As we hear about the damaging effects of climate change in Pakistan, pray this week for the resilience of vulnerable communities striving to rebuild; for the wisdom of government officials as they manage emergency responses. And lift up the brave individuals who step forward in times of crisis.

Sunday 24 May

An unusually heavy monsoon season in Pakistan last year led to an immense national disaster, with more than 5.8 million people affected by severe flooding. Father God, we pray for the 2.4 million people who were displaced, many of whom are still living in temporary camps. Amen.

Monday 25 May

‘The priority needs for those displaced are critical,’ says a Tearfund staff member in Pakistan. ‘They need shelter, safe water, sanitation facilities, essential health services and livestock support, which is vital for livelihoods in affected areas.’ Lord, we pray that help will reach the most vulnerable. Amen.

Tuesday 26 May

Tearfund is helping people in eight flood-affected areas with food, hygiene kits, blankets and essential items. More than 19,000 individuals have been supported in this time of despair, stress and need. Pray for people who lost loved ones, homes, livelihoods and livestock. May God give them comfort, peace and strength as they face the challenge of rebuilding their lives.

Wednesday 27 May

Ravi wanted to learn how to repair mobile phones, but he couldn’t afford to pay for the training courses. ‘The exorbitant fees quoted left me feeling discouraged and limited,’ says Ravi. Lord, we lift up young people in Pakistan, struggling to find employment and training opportunities. Amen.

Thursday 28 May

One day, Ravi spotted an advert on social media highlighting mobile phone repair training offered by Tearfund’s partner in Pakistan. Praise God that Ravi was able to join the course. ‘With the skills I am learning,’ Ravi says, ‘I’m fully committed to opening my own mobile phone repair shop in my village, bringing essential services directly to my community.’

Friday 29 May

Simon’s community has no sewage system or electricity. But having joined a Tearfund Influencing and Social Accountability training session, Simon is committed to bringing change. ‘We learnt how to effectively engage with government officials and politicians, opening a dialogue that has the potential to transform our community,’ says Simon. Pray that government officials will listen and make changes as a result.

Saturday 30 May

Unprecedented months of drought are causing havoc for farmers in southern Pakistan. To support vulnerable farming communities, Tearfund secured an insurance payout for chilli farmers. Pray that the 3,000 families receiving food and new, suitable seeds for planting will have a fresh start.
