Years of conflict in the Mekong region have forced thousands of people to leave their homes and flee to safer areas. But the earthquake that hit a country in this region last year (which we can’t name for security reasons) left many feeling like nowhere was safe. This week, pray for peace and restored hope for vulnerable communities across the region.
Sunday 4 October
‘Through every challenge, I remember that his calling is not just to deliver aid, but to be a vessel of compassion, unity and hope,’ says Maung (not her real name), a humanitarian coordinator for Tearfund’s partner. ‘I serve, not for recognition, but because love compels me forward.’ Thank you, Lord, for Maung. We ask that you will bless her and surround her with your protection. Amen.
Monday 5 October
Conflict in this country since 2021 has turned bustling towns into areas littered with landmines, preventing families from returning. ‘The streets are overgrown, abandoned and heavy with loss,’ says Maung. ‘Fear has driven many to hide in valleys.’ Father God, we pray into the pain and suffering that so many have experienced. We ask for healing for those who are hurting and peace for people living in fear. Amen.
Tuesday 6 October
In the first quarter of 2025, a devastating earthquake hit. More than 3,500 people died and thousands were injured. With their houses destroyed or unsafe, the survivors moved into makeshift tents, desperately trying to provide shelter for their children. Lord, we pray for your comfort for each person who lives with the daily heartache of having lost a loved one. Amen.
Wednesday 7 October
Praise God that following the earthquake, Tearfund’s local church networks and partners were able to launch search and rescue operations within hours. ‘In the year after the devastating earthquake, we were able to provide life-saving aid for more than 77,000 people,’ explains Tet (not his real name) from Tearfund’s partner.
Thursday 8 October
‘I’ve heard that our school might not reopen. I’m very eager to learn, so I am joining online classes,’ says one 15-year-old student. ‘Right now, my main worries are repairing my house and continuing my studies, and I pray to God for help.’ Lord, we thank you that you care about every area of our lives, and we pray for new opportunities for this generation of young people, desperate to learn, yet unable to access education in schools. Amen.
Friday 9 October
Today, join with the Tearfund team in praying for the success of their long-term plans in this region. ‘We plan to continue addressing urgent multi-sector humanitarian needs, promoting early recovery and strengthening resilience. We will continue to strengthen and empower local churches and partners in disaster response.’
Saturday 10 October
Today, spend some time meditating on the words of Maung: ‘I serve, not for recognition, but because love compels me forward.’ Thank you, Lord, that through your son, Jesus, you have shown us how to live our lives, to be vessels of compassion, unity and hope in a broken world. Amen.
