What is the Let's Change the Climate Challenge?

This exciting one-week challenge includes biblical reflections, practical activities and a visiting speaker to help your church take practical steps to tackle the climate crisis.

Every day, there will be a new challenge for everyone to get involved with – from reducing plastic waste to saving water. We hope it will show your church community that, together, we can make a real difference for people who are being pushed into poverty by the climate emergency.

You can start the week-long challenge whenever suits you and your church, and at the end a speaker from Tearfund will visit your church (or send a pre-recorded video, if you prefer) to see how you all got on with the challenge and share more about how you can make a difference globally.

Why take on this challenge?

The climate is changing. So, it’s time for us to change too: in the name of justice, in the name of love, and in the name of hope. Because Jesus called on us to love our neighbours – wherever in the world they may be.

The climate emergency is ruining lives around the world – especially the lives of people living in poverty. But no matter how great the crisis may be, our God is greater.

When the church comes together, we can achieve the extraordinary. So, Let's Change the Climate by putting our faith and our hope into action.

  • No – you can do the challenge at whatever time suits you and your church. The challenge is six days long and it’s recommended that you start on a Monday. We have resources to help you plan what to do for your Sunday service following the challenge.

  • Each day of the challenge involves a short reflection, a short film featuring some of Tearfund’s work around the world, a prayer, and a climate-related action you can take. For the action, two options are available: one easier and one more challenging!

  • Yes – the challenge can be done by individuals, small groups, as a congregation, in families… we want to get everyone talking and thinking about the climate crisis.

  • It’s vital whenever discussing this topic to convey the urgency of it. The climate is changing, and that change is causing a catastrophe that is affecting the lives of billions of people. We have a responsibility not to shirk away from the truth – however unsettling it may be.

There’s also a climate petition that your church can add its voice to, and as part of the Sunday service talk there’s the opportunity for people to give financially to help those most affected by the climate emergency.
