As it approaches a year since the current escalation of conflict in Gaza and Israel, the magnitude of suffering that it has brought with it is devastating.

Almost 2 million people have been displaced from their homes. Most have faced the loss of loved ones and of homes, livelihoods, education and peace. For the majority in Gaza, ordinary life as it was a year ago is a thing of memories. Reality is a constant story of fear and lack and the needs that accompany daily living are as pressing as ever.

For people who are facing any sort of illness, including major issues like cancer and heart disease, the war has made being unwell even more difficult to cope with. It's hard to get the most basic essentials like clean water and enough food or safe, comfortable shelter. And medicines can be even more of a challenge to get hold of. Many people have lost their means of making an income to pay for them, but even for those who can afford them, supplies are limited – sometimes non-existent.

In response, Tearfund will be working through a partner organisation called International Health Partners (IHP)* to help make sure people in Gaza can get the medical help they need.

IHP specialises in sourcing medicines and health supplies and finding ways to get them to clinics, hospitals and healthcare workers in places where there is humanitarian need, like Gaza.

Medical help in Gaza

Tearfund’s support will help to make a number of vital healthcare provisions possible in Gaza through IHP and its network of distribution partners. The work is carried out via mobile healthcare clinics that operate in a number of areas in Gaza and includes the following:

  • Non-communicable disease clinic: our support will fund the donation of a range of medicines that treat chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. For people living with these types of disease, any gaps in their treatment are dangerous and, in some cases, can be life threatening. The conflict has significantly affected medication supply, so Tearfund’s support of IHP will help to fill those gaps.
  • Child and maternal health clinic: our support will help provide paediatric antibiotics to support sick children as well as supplements to help provide pregnant women with vital nutrients.
  • Wound management clinic: we will enable the donation of a range of medical supplies including syringes, needles and dressings to help people who have been wounded in the conflict.
  • Free healthcare medical days: when it is safe to operate, the local partner runs free medical days to provide access to healthcare for those who need medical help. Tearfund will be supporting IHP to supply vital medicines and medical supplies for use on these free medical days.

Tearfund’s support of IHP will help to make sure that a wide range of medications and supplies – from primary healthcare like antibiotics and antifungals to more specialised products including mental health products and oncology medication – can reach people in Gaza who need this assistance urgently.

Tearfund has also been supporting those affected by the conflict in the West Bank, which you can read about here, as well as helping to provide assistance for people displaced in Lebanon.
