Afghanistan: some relief after the earthquakes

After the recent earthquakes in Afghanistan, Tearfund supporters have helped provide survivors with cash assistance.

Mahjabeen* is 35 years old. She lives in Afghanistan, in an area that was badly affected by the 6.0-magnitude earthquake on 31 August and the two large ones that followed in the next few days.

The personal losses Mahjabeen has experienced, like so many of her neighbours, are devastating.

‘I will never forget that horrible night’

She tells us, ‘At midnight, everything shook heavily, and my house was destroyed. A big rock rolled from the mountain, fell on my husband and killed him. My two daughters were injured. We felt like it was the end of the world and our lives were over.

‘I will never forget that horrible night in our lives.’

Now, Mahjabeen lives in a temporary camp along with her surviving relatives.

Meanwhile, regular earthquakes continue to shake the region, bringing further terror to people traumatised by the three major ones that caused so much destruction and heartache.

‘The frequent daily earthquakes have tortured us,’ Mahjabeen shares.

One of the ways Tearfund has been responding to support people like Mahjabeen is by providing cash assistance, distributed by our local partner who carried out assessments to make sure that people in greatest need received it.

At times like this, cash is a dignity-protecting, hope-restoring way to help people who are facing such catastrophic loss, allowing them to take back some control over their lives.

‘Thank you to the donors,’ says Mahjabeen. ‘We really needed cash to buy the things which are important for our survival.’

‘The night was a very dangerous night in our lives, because in the dark in every home, every person (child, young, old) was yelling, crying and in deep fear.’
Feroz, 15-year-old earthquake survivor, Afghanistan

‘The roof of our house fell on us’

Feroz’s* family also received cash assistance from Tearfund, via our local partner in Afghanistan.

He is 15 years old and his story is equally heartbreaking. He, too, is living in a temporary shelter after his home was destroyed.

‘In the night, about 12 o’clock, there was heavy shaking and what sounded like a blast,’ he tells us. ‘The roof of our house fell on us. Our neighbours who were sleeping outside came to rescue us.

‘All my family members were injured, and my father died. I was trapped under the collapsed roof for two hours in the dark night. Later, our neighbours found me, brought me out of the rubble and took me to the nearby clinic.

‘In the morning, they transferred me to the city hospital. I had to travel in a government helicopter because the roads were blocked [by rubble and debris from the quake].’

When our team visited Feroz, there were still injuries and bleeding on his face.

‘The night was a very dangerous night in our lives, because in the dark in every home, every person (child, young, old) was yelling, crying and in deep fear.

‘Frequent earthquakes are still happening every day, and we are scared,’ admits Feroz, who expressed deep gratitude for the cash support he received.

‘I am happy that we can use this money to buy things that my family really needs.’

If you’d like to give, please do so here. You can also find a guide to pray for the situation here.
