Andrew’s story of moving from a place of giving to receiving

Andrew Duff shares about Tearfund's Church and Community Transformation in Rwanda, inspired by local resilience.

On 28 February 2025, Andrew Duff set off for Rwanda with Tearfund. He was part of a group of staff from SPAR, EUROSPAR and ViVO stores in Northern Ireland. At first apprehensive about the trip, Andrew couldn’t have imagined the life-changing impact it would have on his faith and his life.

Partnership in Action

SPAR, EUROSPAR and ViVO retailers have been match funding our Christmas Appeals in Northern Ireland for over a decade now. Having contributed significant funds to Tearfund work over the years, this was an opportunity to show staff members first-hand the difference the money raised makes to people’s lives.

The team, accompanied by our Partnerships Executive Jayne Ross, was able to experience Tearfund’s Church and Community Transformation (CCT) work in Rwanda, and the positive impact that the church is having in communities. Andrew recalls visiting one of the villages on the outskirts of Kigali. He shares: ‘We met with the people, who greeted us with song, and shared with us their stories and pride at turning their lives around.’

Encountering Kindness

‘One person took us to their house. It was small, dark and a reality we could barely imagine,’ said Andrew. ‘However, it was also beautiful. The pride they had for their home was immense. They were so proud of what they had achieved, they had a house that they owned.

‘On the way back the villagers sang and danced, and it was infectious. We suddenly joined in. Dancing our way down this dusty road in rural Rwanda. Dancing and clapping, and celebrating their achievements.

‘On the way back to the car, the villagers came to us with a basket full of fruit. People with so little demonstrated so much appreciation and kindness in that single act. They didn’t know it, but they changed my life.’

The Power of Community

The spirit of unity Andrew observed in Rwanda left a deep and lasting impression on him. He continues, ‘That sense of community is something which struck me the most. How people in Rwanda, who had suffered great oppression and genocide, poverty and lack of opportunity, had recreated community through the church, to rebuild opportunity for a better life, through worship, forgiveness and reconciliation. It was incredible to witness.’

Finding Faith

As Andrew reflected on all that was going on through the church in these villages, he had a powerful moment of encountering God's love. Upon arriving home, he found himself drawn to Wellington Presbyterian in Ballymena, where he recognised a sense of community that mirrored what he’d experienced in Africa.

As he was welcomed into that church community, opportunities opened up to share something of his own journey, shaped by his encounter with God through the work of Tearfund. On 17 May 2025, following a Hope Explored course in the church, Andrew went off to a corner, and there he gave his life to Jesus.

A Call to Action

Andrew says, ‘The power of the church, and community, cannot be underestimated. The power of your church, in partnering with Tearfund, can make a life-changing difference, whether that be in Africa, on the ground, in your home church, or in your heart. Every penny really does make a difference, as does every prayer and every bit of support your church can offer.’

Get involved this Christmas

SPAR stores will once again partner with Tearfund on our Christmas Appeal this year. This means that all donations, up to £500,000, will be doubled. With your help we could raise £1 million for Tearfund work around the world.

Having now seen how much can be achieved through your donations, Andrew’s advice is to approach your local SPAR, EUROSPAR, ViVO or ViVOXTRA store, and ask to speak to their community champion about getting involved.

This Christmas, you could give a gift that changes a life forever.
