Flooded street with debris and a collapsed building after a natural disaster.

This photo, taken by a volunteer from our local partner, PHILRADS, shows damage in Catanduanes, Philippines, after Super Typhoon Fung-wong made landfall last night, 9 November, at 9.10pm local time.

One Tearfund staff member in the Philippines says, ‘It’s the strongest storm I’ve ever witnessed.’ Her family is safe, as are all our other local staff and partner staff (although many are without power or internet currently), but more than a million people had to be evacuated ahead of Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which made landfall just after 9pm local time last night, 9 November. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has declared a state of national calamity for one year.

Our staff member asks, ‘Please pray for protection, safety and for swift access to resources for people who have been displaced.’

Over the weekend, Tropical Cyclone Fung-wong escalated into a Super Typhoon, bringing torrential rain and sustained winds of 115mph (185km/h), with gusts of up to 140mph (225km/h).

More than 1.75 million people have been affected by the super Typhoon, with 796,726 individuals currently sheltering in 11,681 evacuation centres across the country. Schools and government offices in the Philippines have been ordered to close, including in the capital, Manila, and hundreds of flights have been cancelled.

The extent of the damage is still being assessed, but it is likely to be significant.

This disaster comes not long after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which struck Cebu earlier last week, killing at least 188 people and leaving many homes damaged and people displaced. The same region was also hit by an earthquake at the end of September.

Right now, Tearfund’s local partner, Philippine Relief and Development Services (PHILRADS), is standing by ready to respond.

The immediate needs they’ve identified so far are:

  • clean, safe drinking water,
  • food packs,
  • hygiene kits.

Please join us in prayer for all those affected by this unfolding disaster.

Pray for the Philippines after Super Typhoon Fung-wong

    • Pray for protection and safety for everyone affected, and for all those involved in rescue and recovery efforts.
    • Pray for swift access to resources, such as shelter, food, clean water and medical supplies, for people who have been displaced.
    • Pray for comfort for all those who are facing losses of all kinds because of this disaster.
