Every year, Tearfund partners with a well-known figure to front our Christmas Appeal across Northern Ireland. This year, we decided to try something new by partnering with a local influencer to help promote the Appeal. Elanna McGowan, better known as Elle Pearls, is a Canadian-born beauty and lifestyle creator and the founder of Pearl Beauty, a minimalist makeup brand launched in 2020. After meeting her husband, Paddy, while serving as camp counselors at Muskoka Woods in Ontario, Elanna relocated to Northern Ireland ten years ago.

Elanna and Paddy now have three children and run her growing beauty business together. Beyond her makeup line, Elanna has established herself as one of Northern Ireland’s most successful content creators, with over 162,000 followers on Instagram alone. She often uses her platform to share her daily devotions and personal reflections on faith. Elanna and Paddy worship at Causeway Coast Vineyard in Coleraine; over the last year, they have supported the work of Vineyard Compassion through Pearl Beauty. This partnership grew out of Elanna’s desire to mobilise her platforms to support communities on both a local and a global level.

A superpower for change

This year, our Christmas Appeal highlighted the lack of opportunity for women in the Central African Republic (CAR), where three in four women can’t read or write. Without access to an education, women lack the essential skills needed to earn an income and pay for necessities like food and school fees for their children. In the CAR, nearly 70% of the population live in extreme poverty.

However, with Tearfund’s support, local churches are working to bring change. Many are running support groups and literacy centres to empower women with the skills they need to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. As a successful Christian businesswoman, Elanna values the education and opportunities she has received to realise her God-given potential; she felt like the perfect voice to share the life-changing impact of this work.

A message from Elanna

When asked about her involvement with Tearfund’s Christmas Appeal, Elanna said:

‘I am incredibly proud to run a woman-led business that has female empowerment at its core. I enjoyed supporting the Tearfund Christmas Appeal this year because it spoke to a topic close to my heart. Every mother wants to create a good life for her children, but the painful reality for many women in the CAR is having to make a choice between feeding a child or sending them to school. I know that education has the power to change everything; it provides the skills and the confidence to change lives forever.

‘It’s been a privilege to partner with Tearfund in this work as they strive to give women and their children the gift of education. As a business owner myself, it’s also been humbling and inspiring to see how the SPAR group has matched every donation, doubling the impact, and how they put so many of their own resources behind promoting the appeal.’

Looking forward

With support from Tearfund, local churches in the CAR continue to help communities build a brighter future. Women who once only dreamed of running their own businesses are being equipped with literacy and vocational skills, such as tailoring and knitting, to realise those dreams.

This year, with your help, we’ve raised nearly £500,000 to help fund this vital work and other projects like it around the world. From the bottom of our hearts – thank you!

Pray with us

    • Pray for women in the Central African Republic, that they might have increased access to education and training to help them lift themselves out of poverty.
    • Pray also for the churches seeking to enact this transformation in their communities.
    • Give thanks for the incredible response to our Christmas Appeal and the remarkable generosity shown by people across Northern Ireland.
    • Give thanks for local business owners who feel led to use their businesses as a means to give back to communities both near and far.
    • Pray for Elanna, that as she uses her social media platforms to share a message of hope, others might encounter Christ for themselves.
