A day in the life of Amjad, a humanitarian worker in Gaza

How Tearfund’s partner in Gaza is living out God’s love as they treat patients amidst ongoing conflict.

In times like these, hope can seem hard to find. But even amidst the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, God’s healing love is at work. And there are glimmers of hope all around.

It’s in the hands of our partners in Gaza as they carefully bind up patients’ wounds.

It’s in the eyes of grieving families in Lebanon as they receive hot meals and hygiene kits from our church partners.

And it’s in the steadfast faithfulness of our partner staff, like Amjad, a Health Officer in Gaza. He oversees a clinic in Nuseirat, Gaza, run by Tearfund’s partner, Anera.

Here, medical staff are working tirelessly to treat people who are sick and injured, in difficult conditions and with limited supplies. Watch Amjad’s video update from the clinic below, as he shows us a day in his life as a humanitarian worker.

‘Thank God I found the Anera clinic.’

‘The clinic provides primary health care services, with support from Tearfund,’ Amjad says. ‘Services here include paediatrics, gynaecology, and general medicine. We also provide internal medicine, caring for patients with chronic diseases and disabilities.

‘Many of the medicines and treatments available here are provided with support from Tearfund,’ Amjad says. ‘This is especially important given the recent scarcity and high prices of medicines. Thank God, we were able to bring these treatments with support from Tearfund.’

As Amjad drives to the clinic in this video, you can clearly see the devastation caused by the ongoing conflict. He drives past piles of rubble that used to be homes, schools, offices. Places of joy, community, and people quietly going about their lives. Now, families are sheltering in tents on the beach.

It’s in this landscape that humanitarian workers like Amjad bring so much hope. They serve as a reminder that even in the darkness, God’s loving kindness shines through. One patient at the clinic said, ‘Thank God I found the Anera clinic. First, we found that medications are consistently available. Secondly, one doesn’t wait long here; there is a quick delivery of services.’

Pray for humanitarian workers

Humanitarian workers like Amjad desperately need our prayers. Our partners in the Middle East are selflessly showing God’s love to people in need every day, but the circumstances are extreme.

‘We are living under conditions that no longer reflect human dignity,’ says Amjad. ‘We have gone from living in our homes, sheltered by walls that protected us, to living in tents.

‘We continue to struggle with scarcity and strict control over food supplies. The price increases affect all basic items, nutritional supplies, and even medicine.’

Thank you for praying with us. Let’s continue to pray together for peace across the Middle East, and for God’s kingdom to come on earth as it is in heaven.

‘He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.’
(Psalm 147:3)

How to pray

    • Thank God that ceasefires have been agreed in parts of the Middle East. Pray these would lead to just and lasting peace across the region, including Gaza and Lebanon, so communities can rebuild with hope for the future.
    • Thank God for the Nuseirat clinic and for our staff and partners across the Middle East as they support those who are displaced, injured or traumatised.
    • Pray for medical supplies and food to flow freely into Gaza and across the region so that patients can receive the care and nutrition they need.
    • Pray for safety and protection for humanitarian workers like Amjad as they work under impossible conditions to serve others.
