Tearfund’s Nepal country director is warning of immense needs and trauma, as Tearfund launches an Emergency Appeal for the Nepal Floods.
Pranaya Chhetri, Tearfund’s Nepal Country Director says:
“The needs in the Nepal flood-zone are immense. Alongside the search and rescue missions and emergency medical treatment, people need water, food and shelter. Tearfund’s partners are in the area urgently working with local authorities, communities and other humanitarian organisations to establish the most effective way to respond.
“Tearfund and its partners are also preparing to meet the huge psycho-social needs. This trauma could last for generations. People have seen their families, friends, homes – everything that is precious to them – swept away right in front of them. They’re terrified that secondary flash-flooding could strike at any time. Nowhere feels safe.
“ Tearfund’s partners are responding to a disaster amid their own, deep, personal grief. They are weeping for loved ones and their communities while working round the clock to provide urgent assistance to survivors.”
More than 540 people are reported to have been killed in Wednesday’s flash floods, although that number is expected to rise. Around 1,500 are still missing.
