Tackling the plastics crisis

Plastic pollution threatens the lives of people living in poverty. But Christians are uniting to take global action.

Take the plastics pledge

What is the plastic problem?

We're facing a global plastics crisis. Plastic pollution is damaging our planet and impacting more than 2 billion people worldwide who don’t have a safe way to dispose of their waste. This is harming human health and the environment, and it also affects the livelihoods of 40 million waste pickers.

God cares deeply for his creation, from the rivers clogged with plastic to the people breathing in fumes from burning waste. And he calls us to help restore it.

We know that change doesn't only happen on the world stage. We can all join the movement to tackle the plastics crisis through our daily habits and actions.

Will you play your part?

Will you pledge to reduce your plastic usage and pray for communities in poverty?

The scale of the problem

What is Tearfund doing?

In August 2025, Tearfund will be attending the next round of UN plastics treaty negotiations (INC-5.2) in Geneva, Switzerland.

We’re calling for a global plastics treaty that addresses the full life cycle of plastics, from production to disposal. This kind of ambitious, legally-binding treaty is vital for communities living in poverty, and we’re so grateful for your faithful prayers and support on this journey.

You can find out more about the journey towards an ambitious plastics treaty here.
