This week, pray for countries in southern Africa that are particularly at risk because of natural disasters and extreme weather. Climate change remains a threat, especially to people living in poverty.
Sunday 23 August
Give thanks for more than 300 young Kenyans who joined the Fearless Movement to explore their purpose and identity in Christ. Inspired to be ambassadors for peace, they’ve committed to being salt and light, using their energy to influence their communities for positive change. Praise God for this generation seeking to bring hope and transformation across Kenya.
Monday 24 August
In early 2026, severe flooding in Mozambique affected more than 724,000 people, destroying homes and forcing thousands of people to evacuate. Because of Tearfund’s training, local church leaders were prepared and able to respond rapidly to the crisis. Pray for wisdom, strength and resilience for local church leaders as they provide vital assistance in times of crisis.
Tuesday 25 August
Once left behind without healthcare or schools, families in Lihukwa, Zambia, faced a daily struggle. Through Tearfund’s Transforming Communities programme, Reverend Chinyama sparked a transformation, starting with a community farm. Today, Lihukwa flourishes with a new clinic and school. Pray that this transformation spreads across Zambia, bringing lasting change.
Wednesday 26 August
In Uganda’s Bidi Bidi settlement, reduced aid has left thousands of refugees hungry. During mango season, children walk miles to pick fruit – a vital lifeline to supplement their meals. Uganda hosts more than 1.5 million refugees fleeing violence in neighbouring countries. Pray for urgent practical support for refugees.
Thursday 27 August
Violet in Nyanga, Zimbabwe, proudly showed Tearfund’s team the vegetables she had grown through the nutrition garden in her community, after being provided with tools and training. She’s earning a small income through selling her produce and can now pay for an electricity connection. Pray that livelihood projects like this one will provide an income for people like Violet.
Friday 28 August
Women and girls are particularly vulnerable in Zimbabwe because they are considered low status. The Nyanga nutrition garden gives leadership roles to women, and this is making a huge difference. Pray for projects like these, which address gender inequalities and empower women, so that communities can better prepare for and recover from climate-related disasters.
Saturday 29 August
‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matthew 25:40)
Heavenly Father, thank you for the resilience, hope and unity we see in the communities in which Tearfund works. We rejoice as we see local churches showing Christ’s love where the need is greatest. Help us be your ambassadors, following Jesus to be his hands and feet in places of extreme poverty, sharing your hope and love in a broken world. Amen.
