Three major earthquakes hit eastern Afghanistan over six days in September 2025, killing more than 2,200 people, injuring over 3,600 and destroying entire villages. A year on, we continue to pray for communities and families as they recover and rebuild.
Sunday 18 October
‘After the earthquake, we lost our house, household items and livestock,’ says Shamila Bibi, who found herself trapped, with half of her body under the fallen roof. Her son was injured in the same devastating earthquake that ripped through their area. Pray for families who lost everything in the earthquake.
Monday 19 October
Shamila Bibi and her family received food and a tent from the government, but ‘unfortunately, the tent leaked when it rained,’ she explained. Praise God that Tearfund’s partner in Afghanistan was able to provide the family with blankets, mats, a tarpaulin, a hygiene kit and AFN 4,000 (around £45) in cash for warm clothing.
Tuesday 20 October
Solomon Cornelius from the Tearfund Afghanistan team invites us to join him in prayer today. ‘We need your continuous prayers for the protection and healing of affected communities and for our country team, who are tirelessly helping people in hard-to-reach areas.’
Wednesday 21 October
‘I heard a loud noise, and I saw the roof of my house fall and my two daughters were buried in the rubble,’ says Ahmed, who was sleeping outside the house on the night of the earthquake. Lord, we pray for your comfort and peace for those who have lost loved ones. Amen.
Thursday 22 October
With thousands of homes destroyed in the earthquake, many families were forced to live in tents. ‘You know that it is not easy to be in the tent in the winter because the small children cannot bear the cold,’ says Pari Jan. Pray for the provision of safer homes for each of these families.
Friday 23 October
‘At midnight, everything shook heavily and my house was destroyed,’ says Mahjabeen. ‘A big rock rolled from the mountain, fell on my husband and killed him. My two daughters were injured. We felt like it was the end of the world and our lives were over.’ Father God, we pray for Mahjabeen. Be with her and comfort her in her grief. Amen.
Saturday 24 October
Praise God for the provision that enabled Tearfund’s partners to carry out assessments and provide cash assistance to people like Mahjabeen who were most in need. ‘Thank you to the donors,’ says Mahjabeen. ‘We really needed cash to buy the things which are important for our survival.’
