In early 2026, Mozambique was hit by catastrophic floods after receiving three months’ worth of rain in ten days. More than 700,000 people were affected, with tens of thousands of homes destroyed and critical crops wiped out. This week, lift up the resilient communities and the vital emergency and recovery work led by Tearfund and local churches.
Sunday 25 October
When he saw the flood damage, Judas Massingue, Tearfund’s Country Director for Mozambique, said, ‘This flooding has been devastating, destroying crops and people’s livelihoods.’ Pray for the Tearfund team and local partners as they continue to provide relief across multiple areas. Ask for strength and wisdom as they navigate difficult conditions to reach people in greatest need.
Monday 26 October
Across the flooded regions, more than 165,000 homes were damaged, leaving families without shelter. Pray for families living in overcrowded temporary accommodation. Ask God to provide access to food, safe drinking water and basic sanitation for displaced families.
Tuesday 27 October
Church leaders, trained by Tearfund, used WhatsApp groups to send out early warning alerts that saved many lives before the waters rose. Pray for these leaders as they continue to support their communities. Thank God for the technology and training that allow for rapid evacuation and preparedness.
Wednesday 28 October
After the floods, many pastors opened their homes and church buildings to serve as refuge centres for those who lost everything. Lord, we ask that the local churches in Mozambique will be strengthened in their faith and service. May their actions be a testament to your compassion and provide real, tangible help to those in need in their communities. Amen.
Thursday 29 October
As floodwaters spread, residents in the worst-hit areas faced the additional danger of crocodiles. Pray for the physical safety of families who must navigate these dangerous waters. Ask for God’s protection over the most vulnerable from environmental threats.
Friday 30 October
In the Búzi district, which was flooded twice in one month, families are now receiving seeds to replant in their fields that were submerged. Pray for these families in Búzi, that their seeds will lead to a successful harvest. Ask that this support helps them regain their independence.
Saturday 31 October
The #MoçambiquePrimeiro (Mozambique First) movement is working towards long-term peace, reconciliation and disaster resilience. In April 2026, Tearfund was recognised by the movement for our valued contribution to fostering peace and reconciliation within the country. Join the team in praying for the release of more funding. Pray that, through the local church, communities will be better equipped to withstand future climate shocks.
