Across Nigeria, people and families are caught in a cycle that seems impossible to break. Whether it’s the weight of economic hardship or deep-seated social crises, these challenges don't just affect one person – they ripple out and put a strain on families and entire communities.

Tearfund and our local partners are working to change this by creating change from the inside out. Through a process we call Transforming Communities, local churches help their communities identify the resources they already have in order to create solutions to the problem of extreme poverty.

Churches also lead groups through Bible studies that help people rediscover their worth and show them how Jesus sees them. In doing so, they realise that God created them with unique gifts and the potential to create change.

The results are life-changing.

Restoring a community: breaking the grip of addiction

The community of Fwagul had long battled with the destructive impact of drug addiction. It was a crisis that tore families apart and cast a dark shadow over the future of the village and its resources.

But in 2022, the light began to break through the darkness. A Tearfund staff member visited the church in Fwagul to share a vision for transformation. He spoke about Livelihood Support Groups as a way for the community to come together to support one another.

Through a series of Bible studies led by Rev Canon Chukle, the local church’s pastor and a Transforming Communities facilitator, the group became a safe space for members to share their struggles with one another.

As they explored how Jesus saw them through the Bible studies, they started to realise their own untapped potential. The studies helped them look past the shadows of their environment and recognise the God-given gifts and skills they already had.

This spiritual breakthrough also led directly to practical benefits. Within the group, their focus moved away from their addiction and into learning valuable skills like carpentry, tailoring and small business management.

By focusing on what they could do together, the group began lifting themselves out of poverty, replacing a culture of isolation and hopelessness with community and shared purpose.

Today, Fwagul is no longer defined by its struggles – but by renewed relationships, stronger families, improved health and a standard of living, as they leave behind their harmful habits.

Thanks to Tearfund’s Transforming Communities and the Bible-based training, they have a newfound sense of purpose.

Restoring a family: Nankyer’s path to self-sufficiency

While the village of Fwagul experienced lasting change at the community level, Nankyer – a 44-year-old teacher from another village in the same state – found the key to unlocking her own family’s future.

She always dreamed of starting her own farm to help provide for her family. While she worked hard to educate the children of her community, her modest salary wasn’t enough to cover the needs of her husband and four children.

She had long desired to become self-sufficient through producing her own crops and making a living from them, but it all felt completely out of reach. However, another Transforming Communities coordinator visited Nankyer’s church. They were encouraged to start some Livelihood Support Groups, which Nankyer eagerly joined when they started to meet.

Nankyer was driven by her determination to create a better future for her family. Encouraged by the studies, she realised that her ambitions were possible. For the first time, it felt like a viable plan rather than an impossible goal.

Week after week, Nankyer remained faithful in saving what she could from her limited wages. After a full year, Nankyer had enough money to finally realise her dream. She used her savings to rent a plot of land for five years and planted Irish potatoes.

Her first harvest was a triumph, providing enough to sell for a profit and even keep the seeds for the next season. Nankyer now feels the joy working a piece of land she can call her own, and feels fulfilled in being able to provide more for her family. Her household’s burdens are lightened and her children are better cared for.

Nankyer’s story is a wonderful example of what is possible when self-doubt is replaced with hope. Thanks to the generosity of Tearfund supporters, the dedication of the local church, and the freeing truth of the Gospel, she’s found the strength to cultivate the future and change her circumstances.

Let’s pray together

    • Praise God for the restoration of Fwagul and for the harvest Nankyer has reaped in her fields and her family life.
    • Ask for protection and strength for Rev Canon Chuckle and the local facilitators in Nigeria who are walking alongside the community, offering hope and the word of God. Give thanks for their faithful service in the name of the Lord.
    • Pray for those still feeling trapped by the impact of addiction. Ask that they would find the courage to join a safe community and discover how Jesus sees them.
    • Ask for wisdom for Tearfund’s partners as they tackle complex, taboo issues; that they would always reflect the love and healing of Christ, who doesn’t look away from those who need him most.
