Writing a will doesn’t have to be difficult – we've prepared a legacy information pack which tells you everything you need to know, and it's completely free. The pack details the types of gifts you can leave, offers suggested wording and the information your solicitor will need.

FAQs about leaving a gift in your will

You can leave a residuary gift, a percentage or share of the balance of your estate once all other payments and gifts have been made. Many people prefer to give a residuary gift because it keeps in line with inflation and doesn't lose value over time.

Alternatively, you could leave a ‘pecuniary gift’ (a fixed sum of money), or a ‘specific gift’, this is a possession or item such as jewellery, property or shares.

All legacies left to charity are completely free from inheritance tax. Your solicitor will be able to advise you on how to make your will as tax efficient as possible. FAQs for executors

Tearfund administers all legacy gifts in accordance with the guidelines set down by the Charity Commission.

If we have been left a share of the estate then we would be very grateful to receive: a copy of the will, a list of the assets and liabilities of the estate, a copy of the estate accounts when you are ready to make the final payments from the estate and a tax deduction certificate (form R185). If we have been left a fixed sum, then we do not need to see any of the additional information listed above.
