Not alone: a Ukraine story

Tearfund’s local partners in Ukraine are supporting people by creating spaces for them to find comfort and strength.

The cost to human life in Ukraine since the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022 has been vast, and many people have been left living with the grief of, in some cases, the loss of multiple loved ones.

One of the ways Tearfund’s local partners are working to support people left behind is by creating spaces for them to find comfort and strength – particularly for war widows and their children.

When Olesya’s husband was killed, she found herself increasingly isolated from those around her.

The pain of her bereavement made relationships with married friends painful. She says that even among close friends, she felt uncomfortable and awkward because of her emotional state.

Gradually, Olesya began to withdraw from social interactions, even though she still longed for emotional connection with others. She describes it as one of the most difficult periods of her life.

Then, a friend encouraged her to join a support group run by Tearfund’s local partners.

‘What affected her most was the genuine and safe environment of the group.’

A vision of hope

The first meeting she attended focused on creating a ‘vision board’, and she says that although she had agreed to come, she almost immediately regretted her decision. It didn’t feel like something she wanted to do.

However, what affected her most was the genuine and safe environment of the group. So she stayed.

Looking back now, Olesya talks about how deeply this group has impacted her life. She tells how, from the very beginning, she encountered a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Being surrounded by other women – many of whom were also now on their own – helped her step out of the shame and sadness she felt in being alone.

The discussions they had in the group gently touched on personal experiences, allowing participants to open up naturally as and when they felt comfortable. Without pressure, women began sharing their thoughts, emotions and struggles, and they were always met with unconditional acceptance and support.

For Olesya, this became one of the few places where she felt she could truly be herself. And, as she realised that everyone around her was also carrying their own burdens and challenges, it helped her stop seeing herself as ‘different’ or ‘separate’ because of her grief.

As part of the process, the group spent time on art and other ways of creative expression – like the ‘vision board’ exercise Olesya had been unsure of on her first day. Being able to create things, Olesya says, encouraged healing and new perspectives within her, helping her no longer see herself as a victim of her circumstances, but as a creator with some control over her life.

Now, after being part of the group for just over a year, Olesya says she is deeply grateful to the team who run the group. She has returned to ministry, regained meaningful friendships, and no longer feels alone.

Pray for Ukraine

    • Lift up all those who are mourning loved ones because of the conflict. Ask God to bring comfort and to walk closely with them as they rebuild their hope and identity.
    • Pray for local churches around Ukraine and in neighbouring countries who are providing support and safe spaces for people who have lost family, friends, livelihoods, homes and a sense of peace and security.
    • Ask God to bring peace to the country, so that people can return to their homes and rebuild their lives.
